Readmill for authors

Readmill for authors allows you to interact with your readers in a whole new way — right in the margins of your book. See what they are highlighting and sharing, start discussions, and get valuable feedback.

If I’d be an author I’d love the development of Readmill in this direction.
We’ve got some ideas for authors of articles at QUOTE.fm, too. More on this topic in the future.

Basecamp for mobile

Jason Z. for 37signals:

Today we’re announcing mobile web because it’s the right thing to do. Devices and platforms will come and go, but the web browser is here to stay. Does this mean there will never be native apps? Of course not, this isn’t our final word on mobile.

A few days ago I saw the mobile version of Basecamp on my iPhone for the first time and was really impressed.
Everything fits and it’s really fast – perfect for looking up something on the go while riding the subway.

Today the guys are announcing it officially and they even made their whole Basecamp Project public so that you can see how they’re using their own product.

The mobile Basecamp isn’t a responsive design, they build it completely new and while I’m a big advocate of responsive websites I think that was the right call because it makes the experience so much faster. More on that topic in the linked announcement post by Jason.

Book recommendation: Rework

A few days ago I finished reading Rework, the slightly different business book by the founders of 37signals, Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson.

On the cover there is a quote by Seth Godin that says „Ignore this book at your own peril“ and I can only agree.

Everybody who runs a company or — like me — is trying to build up a successful company should read this book. It’s full of little tidbits and advice.

The book is separated into twelve chapters:
First, Takedowns, Go, Progress, Productivity, Competitors, Evolution, Promotion, Hiring, Damage Control, Culture and the Conclusion.

That sounds like a long book about boring topics but it really isn’t. The chapters are short and on point. I almost always was able to highlight one sentence in every section that summarized it for me.

On the one hand I learned a lot and on the other I realized that we at QUOTE.fm are doing a lot of things the „right“ way by just trusting our gut feeling and being ourselves. That feels really good.

So I truly recommend reading Rework. Have fun!

Devs ponder iPhone 5 web design impact

Sebastian Green:

„It just goes to show, even the big companies will change things we all rely on. Responsive designs should not be dependent on certain screen dimensions. It is just more proof that designs need to be fluid in between their media query breakpoints so that they will work on any size of screen.“

Exactly. And that’s why I try to do as much as possible without setting too much breakpoints and just making a website fluid. And if I need to set a breakpoint it will follow my design and not any specific device. So my media query at QUOTE.fm for mobile devices doesn’t exactly match the iPhone’s screen size but is written to effect a wider range of devices.

Look what I just got in the mail

What are you interested in?

Most of my day I’m writing HTML, CSS and Javascript code or am reading. Mostly things about web and technology stuff or photography. As you know I’m interested in tech and photography and am always kind of switching the main topic here on visuelleGedanken.de.

It’s my blog and I post about what interests me the most and that’s fine, but nevertheless I want to know what it is that you are most interested in? Is it seeing my photos? Getting link tips with a short commentary? If, on which topic? Front End Dev tutorials?

Whatever it is that you like most here or would like to see, let me know in the comments below so I can get to know you a little bit better. Thank you!

New Instagram mobile layout

Seems like Instagram also just rolled out a new layout for their mobile photo pages. Looks great. (via)

New tumblr standard mobile theme

The brand new mobile blog: completely redesigned for faster browsing, cleaner reading, and easier sharing.

The new tumblr standard mobile theme is already over a week old but I didn’t notice it until two days ago and I’ve to say I really like it. It’s clean and simple not as the previous one which I really disliked. Nice work!

W3C cheatsheet

Also a nice reference for looking up CSS values is the official W3C cheatsheet. It even offers more infos on the properties. Sadly there are no CSS3 properties like border-radius or box-shadows and the like. (via)

Fluid Apple.com Homepage for iPhone 5

Apple made a subtle vertical responsive Design for the iPhone 5 homepage on apple.com. Nice.
