Today we’re announcing mobile web because it’s the right thing to do. Devices and platforms will come and go, but the web browser is here to stay. Does this mean there will never be native apps? Of course not, this isn’t our final word on mobile.

A few days ago I saw the mobile version of Basecamp on my iPhone for the first time and was really impressed.
Everything fits and it’s really fast – perfect for looking up something on the go while riding the subway.

Today the guys are announcing it officially and they even made their whole Basecamp Project public so that you can see how they’re using their own product.

The mobile Basecamp isn’t a responsive design, they build it completely new and while I’m a big advocate of responsive websites I think that was the right call because it makes the experience so much faster. More on that topic in the linked announcement post by Jason.

This June will be a full month of free time to think, explore, mock up, prototype, whatever. People can go solo or put together a team – it’s entirely up to them. This is a month to unwind and create without the external pressures of other ongoing projects or expectations. We’re effectively taking a month off from non-essential scheduled/assigned work to see what we can do with no schedule/assignments whatsoever.

That’s so cool and I think it’ll work out great for them.
On the one hand more companies should do things like that, but on the other hand only a few are able to put down their day to day work for one month and still be reasonable profitable, I think.

10 Skizzen aus dem frühen Entwicklungsprozess vom neuen Basecamp. Sieht interessant aus, auch wenn mir die Skizzen persönlich etwas zu abstrakt sind. Aber offenbar hat jeder bei 37signals seinen eigenen Stil.

Laut Jason Fried sind es nur noch wenige Tage bis das neue Basecamp veröffentlicht wird. Im letzten Video zeigt er vorher noch mal ein paar nette kleine Details und Features. Ich kann es kaum abwarten es zu nutzen. Klingt irgendwie verrückt, wenn man bedenkt, dass es hier um ein Projektmanagementtool geht. Aber ich habe das Gefühl, es wird mir wirklich Spaß machen. Es sieht gut aus, es scheint schnell zu sein, es hat gute, neue Ansätze und ist eine Webapp, wie ich sie mir vorstelle. Es wird nicht versucht eine native App im Browser nach zu bauen, was sich einfach oft falsch anfühlt – ich muss da an Wunderkit denken – sondern es wird etwas eigenes gebaut, das wie eine Webseite aussieht und funktioniert, sich teilweise aber wie eine App verhält – es gibt zum Beispiel Tastaturkürzel.

Das neue Basecamp bekommt auch einen neuen, verbesserten Kalender. Und ich muss sagen, auch der sieht ziemlich vielversprechend aus. Endlich ein Kalender, durch den man statt um eine Monatsseite zu springen, einfach Woche für Woche nach unten scrollt. Außerdem zeigt er auf einen Blick sechs statt die üblichen vier Wochen. Ich bleibe dabei: Ich freue mich sehr auf das neue Basecamp. Veröffentlichung scheint nur noch ein paar Wochen entfernt zu sein.
