Er ist einfach großartig.

It took me 7 years of shooting Leicas, Canons, Hexars, Fujis… to finally be able to take decent photos with a plastic point-and-shoot-one-setting camera.

Bin begeistert, was Severin da mit seiner „Billigkamera“ macht.

iPhoneography, iPhoneography, iPhoneography, iPhoneography, iPhoneography, iPhoneography, das Wort wird auch nicht besser wenn man es öfter sagt. Wieso muss es dafür überhaupt ein extra Wort geben?

Sind Fotos, die mit dem iPhone gemacht wurden nicht auch ganz normale Fotos? Wir sprechen schliesslich auch nicht von Canonography oder Nikonography oder Leicaography. Und doch haben wir das Gefühl iPhonefotos sind irgendwie was anderes. Eigentlich doch total bescheuert. Liegt es daran, dass die Qualität vermeintlich schlechter ist als die von anderen Kameras? Das Argument zog vielleicht noch vor ein paar Jahren, spätestens jedoch seit dem iPhone 4 haben viele Kompaktkameras das Nachsehen. Liegt es daran dass es immer parat ist und man dadurch gar nicht so wirklich das Gefühl hat es ist eine vollwertige Kamera? Ist es denn eine vollwertige Kamera? Darüber lässt sich sicher diskutieren. Ich jedenfalls habe für mich schon vor einer ganzen Weile das iPhone als Kamera definiert.

Um das ganze auf das nächste Level zu bringen war ich an einem der vergangenen Wochenenden dann mal ausschliesslich mit dem iPhone auf Fototour. Die X100 hatte ich nur als Backup dabei falls es total blöd läuft oder mich der Akku deutlich früher im Stich lässt als ich einplante. Beides trat allerdings nicht ein und so konnte ich das iPhone mal wirklich nicht nur nebenbei als Kamera testen sondern auch probieren wie es sich schlägt wenn das seine Hauptaufgabe ist. Und ich muss sagen, es hat wahnsinnig viel Spaß gemacht und es entstanden tolle Fotos, die andernfalls nur schwer möglich gewesen wäre.

Das iPhone oder auch jedes andere Smartphone ist bedingt durch seine Größe, Aussehen und sonstige Funktion so unauffällig dass mich quasi niemand auf der Straße wahrgenommen hat — oder falls doch, wurde ich nicht als Fotograf identifiziert. Es war wirklich beeindruckend wie nah ich den Menschen kommen konnte ohne dass sie sich von mir haben beeinflussen lassen. Das hat dazu geführt dass ich ohne Probleme echte Momente habe fotografieren können.

The only thing that links all of my work is that it’s all taken in London. I don’t go places to get excited, I stay here to get excited. You speak to most photographers and they go to Afghanistan or to China or to the Himalayas to get excited. I don’t really like the idea of going to India for three weeks and taking tourist pictures and bringing them back and going “oooh isn’t this deep and meaningful” because it’s not. It’s your holiday.

Last week I ordered a copy of the Vivian Maier – Street Photographer photo book. Yesterday I got it and it’s great. Really. Vivian shot most or maybe even all her images with a Rolleiflex on black and white film. But I don’t know which ones specifically. It’s great because obviously she didn’t care too much about equipment but about moments, about capturing life as it happens. At that she did a lot.

In most of her photographs there is much to discover and the moments she captured are often centered around more than one person. So it happens that there often is someone in the picture who discovered her taking the photo. I don’t mean that in a negative way. It just caught my eye and since then I look for that person in every image.

The pages are made from very solid, matte, somehow rough paper. I like it very much.

The book puts a spell on the viewer, not literally of course, but I wasn’t able to put it aside. I was always curious which story was waiting on the next page. After seeing about half of the photos I forced myself to stop and keep the rest for later.

If you are interested in black and white street photography you definitely should buy Vivian Maier – Street Photographer. You won’t regret it.

I’m sure you’ve all heard of Vivian Maier, the street photographer whose thousands of photos were discovered just shortly after her death. There was even an exhibition about her work here in Hamburg, which I stupidly missed. Below is a touching short film about her and the photos she left behind. Have a nice sunday afternoon.
