Responsive Web Design Resources

A collection of resources about the various aspects of responsive web design.

Wow, nice work by Brad Frost and Pon Kattera who put this thing together. Before you google on a Responsive Design/Development topic you should definitely check this resource first. There seem to be articles on everything: Strategy, Design Tools, Layout, Media Queries, Typography, and so on.

QUOTE.fm Read and iPad App

After months of work we finally did it. Yesterday we introduced QUOTE.fm Read and with it QUOTE.fm for iPad.
I hope you like it as much as we do. So let’s start Social Reading together. Thank you so much for your support. <3

Clarity over brevity in variable and method names

David on Signals vs. Noise:

At times being exceedingly clear will seem almost silly at first glance. The name of the method or variable can be longer than the operation being performed! But the silliness quickly dissipates the first time you return to a piece of code and know exactly what it does.

Same goes for CSS class names. At times I think it’s totally stupid how long a class name can get but it almost always pays off in understanding my code even months later.

Big CSS – Slides from Harry Roberts‘ talk

You remember Harry Roberts? Sure you do. He recently was at Canvas Conf in Birmingham and talked about ‚Big CSS‘. It’s sad that there won’t be a video, but Harry put up his slides from the talk on Speakerdeck and I encourage you to click through them, read them and think about them. Even without him talking you can learn some things. Gogogo!

Using jQuery Cycle in a Responsive Layout

markj:

Slideshows. Who doesn’t love a good slideshow? jQuery Cycle is a plugin that makes creating these popular site elements incredibly simple. However, you may have attempted to use Cycle in a responsive layout recently and discovered that the slideshow does not resize as your container changes size.

Today I finalized the new welcome page of QUOTE.fm for tomorrow. A problem I encountered was making the jQuery Cycle slideshow responsive. I found a nice tutorial that helped me with that. It was not the exact solution because I have div’s with images and text which cycle instead of just images but it was a big help.

Useful shortcuts for Sublime Text 2

Nice overview of useful shortcuts for Sublime Text 2, listed by Lucas Fais. If you are working with ST2 definitely take a look.

A few days ago I took a little detour to work. This is one of the photos I took. And now let’s get ready for Tatort.

QUOTE.fm for iPad will hit the App Store soon

So as you might have heard we submitted our iPad app some days ago and we eagerly anticipated the approval. Yesterday it finally happened, the QUOTE.fm iPad app got approved by Apple. We are so incredibly happy. So when will the app be downloadable? Next tuesday! Yes, that’s right, next tuesday we will put the app online and also roll out QUOTE.fm Read on the web and a lot of other great stuff. You’ll love it!

I am so excited about all this and am so much looking forward to next week. But until then Philipp and I still have to do some things so that everything will be fine when you start Social Reading the best stories from the web on QUOTE.fm.

You can either follow me or the QUOTE.fm Twitter account to stay up to date on the news surrounding the launch on tuesday.

CSS-Tricks v10

Chris Coyier:

When I struck off on my own, I knew I wanted to make a go at making CSS-Tricks more of a full time gig. Right away, redesigning the site toward that goal seemed like a good idea. But why do that hidden away in my room? I love the idea of working in public and that’s exactly the kind of work CSS-Tricks is made from. So I thought I’d turn on my microphone and screencast the whole process. Then I’d make those videos available to purchase or subscribe to. To validate it was a good idea, I put up a Kickstarter.

It went pretty well :)

So there it is, the newly redesigned CSS-Tricks.com. I honestly have to say that it’s not necessarily my style of design, but that’s okay. It shows what is possible with CSS and has a lot of little details and things to discover. So it’s truly a CSS-Trick. Great work Chris!
Because I backed his Kickstarter project I have access to „the Lodge“, which means I can watch how Chris build this whole site. He recorded over 150 screencasts, which is pretty awesome. I already watch the first five and am looking forward to the ones with cool Front End stuff.

Watching these screencasts makes me wanting to do screencasts myself again. But this time about coding instead of photography. Maybe I’ll try it some time in the future.
