Steve McCurry:

When you’re starting you are so eager and want to do anything just to get a foothold. Then as time goes on, you become more discerning and are no longer satisfied with what you’ve done. From my experience, many publications of my work were important to me at a first glance, but as time passed the coverage of assignments became smaller and smaller. Much of what I viewed as achievements early on has evolved and I’ve continued to push myself further.

Ryan Brenizer:

You know a camera is fun when it wants to make you take photographs even if you know the composition is garbage, just because the act of taking a photo gives you enjoyment. That’s how we all start when we pick up our first camera, but we lose that joy somewhere along the way as we start drilling down to improve our portfolio or do “serious work” with our cameras.

Ich kann nicht genug von dieser Kamera bekommen und lese immer und immer wieder Reviews, obwohl ich sie ja schon habe, einfach weil es Spaß macht und mich die Meinungen und Fotos von anderen interessieren.

Jay Maisel hat ein Fotobuch als Gedenken an 9/11 zusammen gestellt. Das ist ein Auszug aus dem Vorwort. Gibt auch einige Bilder zu sehen. Tolle Bilder, die nie das eigentliche Geschehen zeigen, sondern immer nur den direkten Blick auf die Menschen. Erst am Ende zeigt Maisel ein Foto des Objekts auf das alle schauen. Sehr gut!

Vergleich der Fuji x100 mit der Leica M9. Die beiden spielen natürlich in verschiedenen Klassen und sind alleine deswegen und wegen des Preises nicht wirklich vergleichbar. Allerdings kommt die x100 ganz gut weg. Man muss ja auch einfach nur mal bedenken, dass es die digitale Kamera ist mit der man am nächsten an ein Leica Rangefinder-Gefühl kommt ohne mehrere tausend Euro auszugeben.

Das Bild kommt quasi schwarz aus der Kamera, mit den ganzen zusätzlichen Informationen, die bei Umwandlung in JPEG verloren gegangen wären, sind tatsächlich noch Wunder möglich.

Diesen Sommer habe ich in Biarritz ein paar Surfer fotografiert. Nun komme ich in der Bildbearbeitung nicht weiter, jede Richtung, die ich selbst gehe, gefällt mir nicht zu 100%, ähnlich ist es mit den externen Vorschlägen meiner Post-Production-Leute. When I’m shooting I almost always just throw the camera into the automatic settings, not worrying about color, exact exposer, flash, or any of that. When I’m shooting I just focus on getting a good composition that’s in focus. It’s one of my favorite parts of doing photography, sitting there with a photo and tweaking the colors, the lighting, the contrast until it looks the way I saw it when I went to take the photo or until looks the way I wish it would have looked when I took the photo. It’s something cameras just can’t do on their own. Photoshop is where the serious art happens.

Mike Matas ist ein hervorragender Designer und auch guter Fotograf, aber an dieser Stelle teile ich seine Meinung nicht. Ich denke vieles lässt sich schon in der Kamera erreichen und erspart den Photoshopteil. Aber gut, wenn er es so gerne mag, kann ja jeder machen wie er will. (Ich bearbeite ja auch gerne Fotos, so ist’s ja nicht.) Aber der letzte Satz „Photoshop is where the serious art happens“. Uhm. Ne.
