gfxCardStatus

codykrieger:

gfxCardStatus is a menu bar application for OS X that allows users of late 2008 — 2011 MacBook Pros (15″ and 17″) to view which GPU is in use at a glance, and switch between them on-demand.

Switching to the integrated graphics card seems to drastically cool down my current MacBook Pro. The battery life also gets better. I’ll simply always switch the graphics card if the MacBook isn’t plugged-in (can be done automatically) or I work with it on my lap while it’s still plugged-in.
Great, so I’ll probably don’t have to buy the new one. Thanks to Kim for the tip.

Just Build Websites

Just take an idea that you have and learn what you need to build it as you go. When it comes to building websites, there is no one-true-way. Enjoy the journey.

Nice little one-pager contributed to Chris Coyier. And the message couldn’t be more true.

Web Inspector for iOS 6 Safari

I just installed the iOS6 Developer Beta and found this little gem for Web Developers:

This means that you can connect your Mac Safari to your iOS Safari and use the Developer Tools on your Mac to inspected the Website shown on your iOS device. This will help very much with developing responsive Designs. Love it!

Fotomarathon Munich

As a photography enthusiast you might have heard of the Fotomarathon in Berlin. The event was a great success last year and will be happening this year, too. In addition to the original event there will also be a Fotomarathon in Munich this year on July, 21st.

The goal is to make twelve photos of predefined topics in eight hours. At the end of the day you have to deliver your SD/CF card with just twelve photos, which were only processed in camera.
It’s a big challenge but will also be a lot of fun, I imagine.

Everyone can join the Fotomarathon, regardless of which gear you use. So if you are interested, you can find more infos as well as the prices on fotomarathonmuenchen.de.

First Look: Retina display MacBook Pro

Jim Dalrymple:

I tried to get the MacBook Pro to get hot enough to turn the fans on, but after a few hours of using it, the fans have still not turned on. Or if they have, I haven’t been able to hear them.

I’ve been doing regular work on the Retina MacBook so far like image editing, writing, email and browsing the Web. I used it on the desk and on my lap and there is no heat coming from the notebook at all. It seems to be a lot like the MacBook Air in that respect.

If that’s true, I’ll buy one.

Art. Meh.

Photography Is An Enigma

Zack Arias:

I also want to thank the leaders in this industry who pretty much hung up their cameras to teach, sell stuff, and start web sites dedicated to helping people become the thing they stopped being in order to start websites and workshops to help people be what they aren’t anymore.

Zack Arias is on fire. I love it.

Jiro, Sushi & Web Type

Trent Walton:

Every time we obtain a font without a license, or perhaps even gripe about a fair price, we’re shooting ourselves in the foot. If we want great web fonts, we must support their creation. When web type designers succeed, so do we.

I totally agree with Trent and I’m very happy to pay for my Typekit fonts.

Today I’ve two remote controls at home and with every device that I buy I get one more and everything gets more complicated.

Sure, there are remote controls that can control all of your devices, but you need to program them and always have it near you.
What would the future look like? Right, controlling your TV with motion and/or voice control.

The future is here now. Samsung’s new flagship Smart TV offers next-generation interactive features such as Motion Control, Voice Control and Face Recognition.

Yoonjung Lee:

Smart Interaction technology offers an immersive entertainment experience that can truly bring people together around the central screen of the home—Samsung Smart TV

You’ll feel like you are in a science fiction movie controling your battle ships fighting aliens. Or something like that. Whatever happens: You are in control.

Responsive mode in Firefox 15

At 1:57 Chris Heilmann shows the upcoming responsive mode for Firefox 15. It looks really good and will really help developing responsive layouts. At the moment it’s often really a pain in the a** debugging a responsive layout because the whole browser and therefore the developer tools get very small while resizing. I hope this feature will also make it’s way to Safari and Chrome.
